Why You Should Include Resistance Training into your New Year Exercise Regime

Starting resistance training in the new year can benefit your physical and mental health.

Resistance training also known as weight training or strength training is the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build strength, endurance and size of skeletal muscle.

Resistance training causes muscles of the body to work and overcome resistance force. Performing resistance training repeatedly and consistently will help you build strength and tone.

Benefits of resistance training –

  1. Improved muscle strength and tone – protects your joints from injury and improves posture.
  2. Increases bone density and strength – reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  3. Maintain flexibility and balance – helping you remain independent as you age.
  4. Helps with weight management and increased muscle to fat ratio – as you gain muscle, your body will burn more kilojoules when at rest.
  5. Increases stamina – as you grow stronger, you will not get tired as easily.
  6. Prevention or control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression and obesity.
  7. Helps with pain management.
  8. Improves sleep – which helps with rest and recovery.
  9. Boosts self confidence and mood.

Resistance training can be anything from body weight strength to lifting weights. Resistance training will look different for everyone but that is the great thing about resistance training is that any one can do it!
