Why Sports Therapists Specialise in Musculoskeletal Injury

Sports Therapy is becoming a popular term used in the health and fitness world. But, what is it?

Sports Therapy is a skilled profession and aspect of healthcare that exists to help you understand why you are in pain and secondly, to overcome the pain, allowing you to safely return back to a pain free lifestyle.

Sports Therapists focus on prevention of injury and rehabilitate you back to a functional, occupational and / or sport specific fitness, whatever your age or ability.

Treatment is based on scientific principles incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare a patient for exercise, sports, work and general lifestyles.

It is important to note that the term or graduate name ‘Sports Therapy’ can be deceiving and may not fully represent what a practitioner can manage. Sports Therapist can treat the general population, not just athletes or sporting individuals!

So.. what does musculoskeletal (MSK) therapy mean?

Musculoskeletal refers to the locomotive system, compromising of muscles, bones, joints, cartilage and adjacent connective tissues.

That means Sports Therapist have a particular interest and specialise in injuries, aches and pains effecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, bones and soft tissue.

There are lots of conditions that cause problems with the musculoskeletal system.

Some of the most common MSK problems include lower back pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle tears, carpal tunnel syndrome and injury to tendon, ligaments and soft tissues.

How Can You Keep Your Musculoskeletal System Healthy?

The best way to take care of your MSK system is to stay as healthy as you possibly can.

To do this you should:

  • See a Sports Therapist / MSK Specialist! They will assess, treat, rehabilitate, advise and educate you on maintaining your health.
  • Exercise regularly – Be sure to include both weight bearing, resistance training and cardiovascular training.
  • Get plenty of good quality sleep – Help your body to recover and rebuild.
  • Maintain a healthy weight – extra weight will put more pressure on your bones and joints and increase your risk of other health related issues.
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco – Smoking decreases your blood flow throughout the body. Your bones, muscles and soft tissue need adequate blood flow to stay healthy.
