The Science

Pain at the front of your hip and groin can be a condition called “Femoroacetabular Impingement” (FAI).

“Femoroacetabular” refers to your hip.

FAI occurs when the femoral head (Ball of the hip) pinches up against the acetabulum (Cup of the hip).

Symptoms include pain in the hip and groin and in some cases also the back, butt or thigh. Symptoms commonly occur at the end of ranges of the hip range of motion such as squatting, bending forward, sitting for long periods and certain sporting activities.

The Solution

Rest is not effective in reducing your hip pain. Load management and activity modification are two of the most important aspects of rehabilitation.

We find the best form of treatment is a combination of stretching, strengthening, manual therapy. It is important to best avoid movements that increase symptoms and aggravate the hip.

An effective rehabilitation program is one that determines your baseline level of tolerable activity and progressively works towards your goals.

Summary

In Summary, FAI is not a quick fix. It is a motion related disorder of the hip with a triad of signs and symptoms. Rehabilitation is often the first line recommendation with a emphasis on load management and activity modification. Remember not to compare yourself to your previous self!
